HSL Meeting (Thurs) 7:00 pm|az @ Gangplank - HeatSync Labs HQ

Thanks to a generous donation from newly minted HeatSync Labs member Corey and Taig Tools, we now have a fully functioning lathe in our lab!  Join us this Thursday to learn all about how it works and how to make cool things with it.

All HeatSync Labs meetings are open to the public for free;  Cover charges are for Scottsdale night clubs!  If you really want to give us money though, t-shirts, membership subscriptions, and Make: magazine subscriptions will be available and hustled aggressively by our Board of Directors.

Benefits of HeatSync Labs Membership: Now with storage!

HeatSync Labs started out as a small gathering of hackers and tinkerers from across the Phoenix valley area in empty UAT rooms and scary alleyways in Mesa. Through much effort, outreach, and fundraising, we have become a premier hackerspace that has not only made itself an internationally-recognizable name among other hackerspaces, but has brought together people and resources that would never have otherwise.  Our momentum continues, and you can help us grow better, faster, and stronger by becoming a member today!

But wait, there's more!

One of our goals in establishing a hackerspace was the ability to access it 24/7.  We can now offer that to our paying members, among other goodies at two tiers:

Basic Membership: For $50 a month, you get:

  • 24/7 access to HeatSync Labs (located inside Gangplank) including a key and security code.
  • Access to shared HeatSync tools and equipment
  • Personal project space for a banker box (first one being provided by HeatSync Labs).

Plus Membership: For $75 a month, you would receive all the benefits of basic membership, as well as...

  • A locker in the lab (lock not included)!

Arduino + Motorcycle == Motoduino!

Editor's Note: As part of my position as Editor at HeatSync Labs, I get to put on a reporter hat and take the spotlight of the Information Super Highway on our local Arizona makers, hackers, and tinkerers. If you or anyone you know is building something pretty awesome and they're within driving distance, leave a comment and I'll see if I can follow up on it. This $timeFrame's features maker is Rene Sanchez, who created an Arduino-powered GPS data display for his motorcycle.

Totally metal, man.

A lot of local hackers roll on two wheels.  Sometimes that means two wheels and a motor, and this time it means two wheels, a motor, and a bunch of stuff from Adafruit.  Our own Rene Sanchez built a navigation data display to show GPS coordinates, direction, temperature, and other handy information on a glowing blue LCD display.

Join Gangplank's FIRST Lego League and HeatSync Labs on September 16th for a night of grown-up merriment in support of the kiddies and their engineering ambitions.

2010: The Year We Made Contact

This is a really boring scene at midnight, FYI...

Photo by American Backroom. Distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.0 Generic License.

The American southwest is a land of dry heat, rugged individualism, and [usually] tasty salsa, but did you know there's hackerspaces there too? Durr! Did you know, however, that there are also hackerspaces and hacker-esque spaces in New Mexico? Neither did we until Quelab in Albuquerque announced their existence to the hackerspheredomspacesauce this year and opened on August 8th. Needless to say, the news tickled the fancy of some of the more wanderlusting elements of our own hackerspace; Those two guys with the VWs, Your Humble Editor and HeatSync Labs champion Jeremy Leung. Being interested in meeting our hacker neighbors, we decided we should make First Contact in person.
