HeatSync Labs Wants YOU!

We have tasks for every type of talent!

Photo by johnarobb. Distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic License.

HeatSync Labs is made possible by the efforts of people committing a large, but rationed portion of time and energy to make stuff happen and make it awesome.  Since we're not retired industrialists with lots of time in our hands (yet), the growth of our to-do list has begun to outpace our rate of getting tasks completed.  Simply put: We want your help.

If you have mad skills, we want them!  We have tasks for everything from Ruby developers to workshop organizers and t-shirt models.  A growing list of tasks has been organized in the wiki.  If you see something that tickles your fancy, recruit yourself by adding your name next to the task and a corresponding Board officer(s) will contact you to begin slaving working with you!

Cube.ly: Reprap’s Lil’ Sister

Building the RepRap

HSL Meeting (Thurs) 7:00 pm|az @ Gangplank - Commons Area

As we've been wrapping up the construction of our RepRep Mendel 3D printer, other variations of the RepRap design have been discussed.  Some variations can even put frosting on cupcakes.  A newer design has been put together with the aim of making the build process quick and cheap.  Dave from the Cube.ly project will be presenting on this design, the Cubely Seabiscuit model, and its differences and advantages over the RepRap Mendel model HeatSync Labs is creating and Makerbot's Cupcake CNC.

As always, t-shirts and Make: magazine subscriptions will be available and hustled aggressively by our mafioso Board of Directors.

Come See us at Maker Faire in San Mateo this May!

It's official: HeatSync Labs will be joining in on the explosion of inventive madness* that is Maker Faire in San Mateo this year, not only as mere observers, but as super-official mooches exhibitors, with a table and chairs and everything!  There will be other hacker spaces representin' too, and we totally want to collaborate on some group shenanigans.  This will be the 5th annual Bay Area Maker Faire, which will take place on May 22nd and the 23rd this year, so make sure to add that to your iCal, Evolution, Google Calendar, or whatever the kids use these days.  A number of HeatSync Labs kin are interested in attending, and if you are among them, post a shout out on our Google group if you'd like to join us in our trip.

A Very Plastic Thank You!

:)

HeatSync Labs would like to give a double thumbs up to everyone who took time off their busy schedules of playing Left4Dead and watching Lazy Town to assist us in our ambitious mission to make open source ABS plastic fabrication fun and sexy for the whole family. We'd like to especially thank everyone that helped us break the Catch 44-esque requirement for printed plastic parts needed for the assembly of the RepRap.  Hats off to:

We also appreciate our east coast allies that wanted to volunteer parts, but had their 3D printers or transport to 3D printers tragically frozen by the snowpocalypse.

Microcontrollers, [Near]spacecraft, Lock Picking, and More 3D Printing, Oh My!

dc480 in spaaaaace!

We're kicking off this month with a psuedo-marathon of awesome featuring microcontroller programming, RepRap construction, and our plans to purge the Harkonnen from Arrakis take some pretty pictures from spaaaaace!  Cancel your spring break bikini shopping and hop over to Gangplank this week and check out these fine events:

Arduino Night (Wed) 7:00 pm|az @ Gangplank - Conference Room

Love Italian engineering but aren't hardcore/suicidal enough to drive a Vespa anywhere near Phoenix?  Learn Arduino instead!  Whether you're just getting your feet wet in microcontrollers or are a closeted PIC controller programmer, you'll have the company of a wide skill range of Arduino hackers to collaborate with, as well as some HSL laptops with the Arduino software preloaded (for real this time).

HSL Meeting (Thurs) 7:00 pm|az @ Gangplank - Commons Area

Over the past month, we've sawed, hammered, and soldered away at the Phoenix RepRap to the point where it now spits out black plastic that looks looks like a plate of spaghetti from an Olive Garden in R'lyeh.  We're hoping to get it to the point where it can print something more elaborate, though.  If you want to help us get there, join us!

Aside from our plastic printing shenanigans, our brave astronautical engineers in SyncFleet have been gathering materials, know how, and funds for our nearspace balloon project.  If defying both gravity and Californian imperialism tickle your fancy, join us and make Arizona proud or something.  So say we all!

BONUS: This meeting will start off with a presentation on the basics of lock picking by Scorche, who's done this sort of thing at Defcon and other events, so if you're pick-curious, come on down!

At both events, we'll have t-shirts for sale and subscription forms for Make magazine available if you prefer not to do it online.  You can also give us cash just for the lulz if you'd like!
