Getting Ready for Poker Night

Hey HeatSyncers,

We talked about getting set up last meeting and what tasks we need to do.  Here's the list, please feel free to take these actions on your own, or work within this forum to get organized.

1.  Buy your ticket early at this week's meeting: $10 per person or $12 per couple (buy a ticket for your friends and make them come too!)

2.  Take the Donation Letter to your favorite shops and stores and ask for support in the way of donations!  These will serve as prizes for our Poker games, because its more fun to play for something.  Any business will do: I've had luck in the past from large groceries, home improvement stores, hardware stores, restaurants and especially locally owned businesses.

3. Decoration Committee: be at the FOP (our usual meeting place) at 1 on Saturday to help with the decorating and set up.  This task is more fun and faster with more people.  I want to be done to let people go home and get ready if they want.

4. Food Committee: we need people to volunteer their time to make their special favorite appetizer/snack/dessert/finger food for the party. We had a couple of folks volunteer their kitchens so that it can be a group effort last week.  Please post your info if you want to help on the food front.  I'd like to have all the food ready to go at the FOP by 5.

5. If you have any of the following to donate or let us borrow, please let me know.  It would be great if you could bring them to Thursday's meeting!

-Poker chips

-Playing cards

-Old mobster movies

-Anything else that fits the theme

Thank you all for your support and help; we are going to have a rockin party and poker night.

Potato Cannon Launch

Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting tonight.  We had a lot of fun.  We are going to meet up at our usual meeting place this weekend on Sunday at 6:00 PM with our cannons.  From there we can caravan out to the desert or a park or something to launch potatoes into the stratosphere.  We will try to come up with a good launch site before we meet and post it up here.  Even if you didn't build one but you want to come along, feel free to stop by.  If you have another cannon you've built before, feel free to bring that along too.  The more the merrier!

We will not be providing projectiles (potatoes) or propellant (hairspray) so you will need to bring your own.  Make sure you buy potatoes that are a little bigger than the barrel of the spud guns.  You want them to fit snug with no gaps around the edges for maximum distance.  For propellant, you want to use some type of cheap flammable hairspray.  I've heard that Aquanet works well.  You may want to try to find something non-scented if you don't want to smell like an 80's hair metal rocker.

Questions?  Do you know a perfect launch site?  Leave them in the comments or email me at ricko@heatsynclabs.org .

Potato Cannon Build

Hello everyone!  We've been wanting projects for the group to work on at meetings and we decided that building potato cannons would be a great project.  It's relatively inexpensive, pretty easy to build, and tons of fun.  We plan to have everyone build these cannons, and then meet up over the weekend for a big group potato cannon bash.  If you aren't interested in the build, definitely stop by the meeting anyway to hang out and have a good time.  If you want to participate and build your very own potato cannon that you can love and cherish forever, then here are the details you will probably want:

What is it: A potato cannon (aka spud gun) is a simple cannon that shoots potatoes.  There are many types and variations of potato cannons.  We will be making a simple combustion cannon.  This means that it will be powered by lighting a flammable gas in a small chamber, essentially creating an explosion.  The explosion will cause the potato to shoot out of the barrel at high velocity, thus giving everyone a wonderful time.  Our cannons should similar to the one in this video I found, although our results may vary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8caW9dVcq3c

Price: The price may change a bit depending on how many people sign up for this project.  Expect to pay at most $30.  Please bring exact change.  We don't have a cash register.  Giving change may be impossible in which case, you will either have to donate the extra money to Heatsync Labs or not participate.

Signup: If you want to sign up for this build, then please RSVP to me, RickO before 5:00AM on Thursday, Sept 17.  Please make sure to include your full name so we know who you are when the time comes.  We will have to pay for all of the materials up front out of our own pockets and the total may very well be a few hundred dollars depending on how many people sign up.  If you sign up and then do not show up or do not pay, your $30 comes right out of our pockets.  We are not rich.  Please do not RSVP unless you intend to pay us the $30.  If you have to cancel then please do before 5:00AM on Thursday, Sept 17.

Materials: As long as you pay the $30 then we provide all of the materials you need.  This includes PVC, Primer, Cement, Ignition system, everything.  The only things the price does not include is projectiles (potatoes) and propellant (aerosol spray).

Tools: We should have all of the tools required, however if you have tools you would be willing to share at the meeting, it would be great if you could bring them.  This will help make the builds go faster and there will be less waiting for tools to become available.  Here is a list of tools that we need:

  1. Power drill with 5/16" drill bit and 1/2" drill bit
  2. Hack saw

The tools do not have to be anything fancy, they just have to work.

Skills: Anyone with two hands should be able to build a potato cannon without a problem.  And even if you do have a problem, you will have plenty of people there to help you out.  For this build you will most likely need to be able to cut PVC with a hacksaw, drill a few small holes with a power drill, and solder a few wires together.  The rest of it is just cementing/taping things together.   Remember there will be lots of people around and available to help you out so don't be discouraged if you think something might be a bit too difficult.

I believe that is all of the information you should need.  If you have any questions, let me know and I will do my best to answer them as timely as possible.  Hope to see lots of cannons being built at the meeting on Thursday!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you may want to wear clothes that you don't mind staining.  PVC cement and PVC primer can stain your clothes and be impossible to get out.  The last time I uesd it, I didn't have a problem but you never know.  I don't want someone staining their favorite shirt or something.

EDIT 2: Changed the drill bit sizes above due to a different, more simple firing mechanism I was able to find.  I also removed the soldering iron from the tools needed for the same reason.

HSL Fundraiser Recruitment Letter

Dearest HeatSync-ers!

The time has come to begin preparations for our very first fundraiser!  Sean, Rick and Jeremy have put the final touches on the Official Paperwork and it will be turned in shorty, allowing HSL to become a real non-profit!!!  That said, we want to be ready to hit the ground with a fundraiser so that we can get some money to MAKE STUFF HAPPEN!

I have offered to head this event, and I am asking for your help!  Please look over the following:

The Facts:
Event Title: HeatSync Labs Presents: "Poker Night (and Other Nefarious Deeds)"
Date: 3 October 2009
Time: 6-10 pm
Location: Mesa FOP (where we usually meet)
Goal: to raise $500 for HSL General Fund

The Vision: "Poker Night (aOND)" will be a step into the past.  From the password-guarded door, to the smokey lighting and the music, it will be an atmosphere of a prohibition-era speakeasy, complete with mob bosses and other underground characters.  There will be something for everyone: card tables at different levels of experience, black and white movies, a table to learn how to count cards, "Lock-picking with Jeremy the Shim" and other nefarious tasks.  Basically, I want to set up an environment that is fun and decadent, but also keeps in mind the Hacker essence while bringing in the bucks.  Costumes will be highly encouraged, but not mandatory.

Interested??? Poker Night will be a pretty simple fundraiser to organize, easily do-able within a 3 week time frame as long as we have great volunteers!  If this sounds like something you want to make happen (and it should- this is the most important thing we can do to get HSL up and running), there is a task for everyone with every skill set and time available.

What I need:

1. Some people to head up sub committees (Ex: Donations, activities, food, advertising). This is gong to be a bi-weekly commitment for meetings, some email communication time, and             the time required to do your appointed task).  Most intensive.
2. Some people to help the people heading the sub committees, This will be a bi-weekly commitment for meetings and as needed by the sub-committee head.
3. Some people who can help set up the day of the event (1 day commitment).
4. Some people to run events: Card dealers, food table/bar person, money collectors. (a few hours during the event)
4. Some people who can help clean up after the event (a few hours commitment).  Least intensive.

What you need to do:
1.Email me ASAP with how much time you have, what you'd like to do and if you have any special resources to donate/lend. (ex: roulette table, decorations, cards ect)
2. Start Brainstorming ideas!! As soon as you're on board, I'll share my more detailed document on how we're going to pull off the awesomeness.
3. COME TO OUR PREPARATORY MEETING!  We will meet this Thursday (17 September) at the FOP around 9:00 (after the meeting is over/spud guns are started).  There I hope to             meet all of you and get the awesomeness underways!

Hope to hear from you all soon- this is an event that SHOULD NOT BE MISSED

WordPress Registration, New Wiki, and Incorporaton!

Last night's meeting:

  • After a a few hours of reading ridiculously long legal sentences and writing some of our own, we've finished our Arizona Articles of Incorporation. Look for a copy of the paperwork on the wiki soon.
  • Sierra is putting together the details for an upcoming fundraiser; please contact her if you would like to volunteer.
  • Next week's meeting will include a build session for potato cannons!  Rick would like to get an idea of how many people are interested in building a spud gun of their own, the project cost should be less than $30.  Please RSVP no later than Wednesday so we can gather up the parts.  Check back for more details in the next few days.

If you haven't already noticed, we've opened registration on the blog so that everyone may contribute content. You'll find the link on the right column of the page under Meta. Once you register you are allowed to create posts and submit them to the editors for review. Please respect the privilege and add premium content.

We've also thrown up a wiki! You can find that in the right column as well, under Internal Resources. It should be a great place to keep project documentation and look for inspiration. If you registered on the wiki when it
was still interfaced with the WP user database, you may need to request a password reset on the wiki.  That single sign on system was badly broken and I've reverted to the typical separate registration. Double check that your login still works for WP and respond to this post if there are any problems.

Next Week’s Meeting Is On Thursday 9/17/09

Bilal Ghalib, the author of the Two Hands Project,  isn't going to be able to make it to Phoenix.  Due to this change of plans we will be meeting at our usual time next week, Thursday 9/17/09 at 8:00 PM.  We have also restructured our meeting routine to move the boring incorporation stuff prior to the actual meeting.  At 7:30, one half hour before the meeting's scheduled time, we will be discussing the progress of incorporation and other business related stuff.  Everyone is more than welcome to attend if they feel the need.  This should open up a lot more time for the fun stuff.

just a wee bit of info…

so a few things were discussed at last week's meeting!

1. location data -- Sean posted the survey for where everyone is located. Make sure to submit your information (no worries, we aren't stalkers). This is extremely important because....

3. meetings -- to avoid conflicting with the MWG (men with guns) and to better allow for planning and prep work, meetings are moving to the FIRST AND THE THIRD THURSDAY OF THE MONTH. part of this will also allow for...
4. social outing -- we're looking to venture out to cool places we hear about (in a totally informal way) one of the other Thursdays of the month. (probably going to be the 4th one). first up, I believe, is going to be Organ Stop Pizza. Feel free to bring the fam', girlfriend/boyfriend, bestfriend/nemesis... whatever!
5. tool database -- RickOoooohhhhh! is still working on getting this up and running, but its looking like it'll be finished soon! so, yay!
6. mailing list -- there is a public mailing list set up. public@heatsynclabs.org. feel free to send questions or discussions out to our fellow heatsync'rs. general questions on ops and the like can still be submitted to info@.
